School tours to Cantabria

Cantabria is designated as a Spanish ‘historical region’ with Santander as its capital city.

Cantabria is part of the world famous Green Spain, the name given to the strip of land between the Cantabrian Sea and the Cantabria is the richest region in the world in archaeological sitesCantabrian Mountains in northern Spain. It is called green because it has particularly lush vegetation, due to a wet and moderate oceanic climate. Its weather is reliable in summer and provides excellent opportunities for exploration by our school groups.

Cantabria is the richest region in the world in archaeological sites from the Upper Paleolithic period, although the first signs of human occupation date from Lower Paleolithic. The most significant cave painting site is the cave of Altamira, dated from about 16,000 to 9,000 BC which has been nominated as a World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Wyvern Schooltours groups often prefer the more accessible Puente Viesgo caves where human handprints 28,000 years old can be seen as you stand in the footprints of our early ancestors.
