School tours to WW2 France are superbly provided for on the Northern coast of France. The D-Day Landings of the 6th of June 1944 have left a rich tapestry of scars across the Channel’s coastline. The Atlantic wall was so strongly built that in several areas of France you can still see the remains of Rommel’s attempt to slow down the Allies’ advance.

School Battlefield Tours to the DDay beaches with Wyvern Schooltours

Pointe du Hoc

No plan survives first contact with the enemySchools will arrive (unless completing a Dover-Calais channel crossing) on a Brittany Ferries ferry that arrives on Sword beach, on the beach that Lord Lovat landed on with the Special Service Brigade and the Kieffer Commandos. From there the study of the lines of advance of the 3rd Infantry division on Op Goodwood towards Caen can draw some excellent learning points about the way that the war was planned, the intricate detail of the D-Day landings verses the ensuing chaos of Operation Goodwood and the Capture of Caen.

Wyvern can help you find important local information about the local regiments almost all of which will have been fighting on the days of the Normandy landings. The D-Day Landings sites, associated museums and historic locations are first class battlefield history locations. From the beach you can move inland and visit some of the German command bunkers (such as hill 116 where the Suffolks fought so bravely) and the artillery emplacements at Merville, Longues and Pointe du Hoc.

A stark contrast can be drawn between the location of the action and the results – the huge British, American and German cemeteries that mark the landscape. It is the experiences that your studetns will have of the ‘Realities of War’ that have the most lasting impact.

Wyvern Schooltours Withdrawal from Dunkirk School Trips - WW2

Site of the Wourmhoudt Massacre today

Wyvern are also able to organise a day studying the Withdrawal from Dunkirk. The Esquelbeck Massacre site can be visited where 100 British soldiers were killed in one hut by the SS. You can also visit the site of a blockhouse that saved the British army, one platoon of men were sacrificed on a suicide mission to halt the German advance and give the British time to escape. You can then visit the site in Dunkirk where the boats from Britain came to rescue the British Army. In the area is the amazing La Coupole V2 rocket centre…a must see visit with a good museum.

Wyvern Schooltours Proudly Supports the Guild of Battlefield GuidesWyvern can also arrange for you to be accompanied by a guide from the Guild of Battlefield Guides who will help with all of the historical elements of the tour that you require. Their services are normally paid for by Wyvern (we are yet to charge a fee) but a small charge for their services (around £3 per student) may be required depending on the individual requirements for the tour…click here for more information.
