These small, friendly towns have attractive waterfronts, beamed houses, colourful marketplaces and narrow streets. Chairlifts to stunning vantage points are popular, as are boat trips on both the Rhine and Moselle rivers affording good views of Rhineland vineyards and castles perched high above the water. Cologne, capital of the Rhineland, is famous for its magnificent gothic cathedral and is a thriving media and commercial centre.
