This is an excellent area for cross-curricular activities. Geographical studies can include working salt marshes, and La Rochelle is famous for its three towers in the old port which date from the 14th and 15th centuries and survived the terrible siege of 1628.‘bocage’ farmlands. Punt rides along the canals of the Marais Poitevin provide the highlight of many visits to this region. The Puy du Fou historical park near Cholet in the Vendée presents chariot races in the Roman stadium, jousters in the Medieval City, falconry displays against the backdrop of the ruined Renaissance château and an 18th century village. The 14th century Porte de La Grosse Horloge leads into the old town where the medieval arcades, cobbled alleys, and the large pedestrianised area make this a wonderful town to explore. A food market takes places every morning in the 19thcentury covered market hall, with additional stalls outside on Wednesday and Saturday. The amazing aquarium is located in the former fish market near the old port and Maritime Museum.Visit one of the offshore islands where life is unhurried. Noirmoutier, known for its oyster parks and salt marshes, is linked to the mainland by toll bridge and tidal causeway. The tranquil Ile d’Aix, reached by ferry, may be explored on foot or by horse drawn carriage. The Ile de Ré is accessed via a stunning toll bridge. In nearby Vienne, Futuroscope, the European Park of the Moving Image, is both fun and educational. Attractions include 360° cinemas, 3D films and various simulator rides, guaranteed to thrill. A range of educational resources are free for school for school groups to help prepare your visit.
