Strasbourg, capital of the Alsace region, is well placed for combined French and German Studies.
In 1949, the Council of Europe chose Strasbourg as its seat. Colmar is a popular and picturesque town close to the wine route. The old town has a vast pedestrian shopping precinct and narrow cobbled streets with half-timbered houses with carved gables and ancient signs.
The impressive Château du Haut Koenigsbourg at Orschwiller is a popular visit. Guided tours of the Schoenenbourg Fortress, part of the Maginot Line, are possible. The white stork, symbol of Alsace, can be seen at the Volerie des Aigles in Kintzheim.
In Germany, within travelling distance are parts of the Black Forest, the university town of Freiburg and Triberg, location of Germany’s highest waterfalls and heart of the traditional cuckoo clock producing region. The ‘Europa Park’ Theme Park is an understandably popular visit.
