Since the Middle Ages, the Loire Valley was the favoured residence of Kings and their entourages. This is reflected in the splendid châteaux for which the area is now renowned. Troglodyte caves are still inhabited in this region. Some uninhabited caves can be visited affording a fascinating insight into the lifestyle of previous inhabitants. Tours, capital of Touraine, dates back to the 1st century. Remains of the Roman town can be seen near the cathedral. In the 14th – 16th centuries, Tours became the place of refuge for the monarchy. The 18th and 19th centuries saw the development of urbanisation. Ongoing modernisation has since provided several shopping complexes. In Vienne, Poitiers is recognised as a town of Romanesque art and history. The medieval city of Chauvigny and St Savin abbey, a UNESCO world heritage site, are worth a visit. Futuroscope, the European Park of the Moving Image, is an experience not to be missed. The theme park is based on multimedia, cinematography and audio visual experiences; attractions include 360°cinemas, 3D films, simulator films, giant screens, and the Magic Carpet where the action is screened in front of you and beneath your seats simultaneously!
