Strasbourg’s old quarter ‘La Petite France’ can be experienced on foot or by boat. The pedestrian precincts with their half-timbered houses are well worth a visit. In the city centre the 13th century Cathedral of Notre dame with its Astronomical Clock stands in a wide cobbled medieval square. The Alsace region of France also offers other beautiful towns to explore such as Colmar. Located on the wine route, your students can enjoy a vast pedestrianised shopping precinct and narrow cobbled streets with half-timbered houses with carved gables and ancient signs. The impressive Chateau de Haut-Koenigsbourg at Orschwiller is also a popular attraction. You can explore the castle under your own steam or with a guided tour.
In fact, the youth hostel Strasbourg 2 Rives is set within a beautiful park, 5 minutes’ walk from the European Bridge which crosses the Rhine and links France to Germany. Why not stroll from France to Germany for an ice-cream after your evening meal at the youth hostel? The German city of Freiburg in the Black Forest is within travelling distance. A traditionally German farmers market takes place on Münsterplatz until 13:30 Monday to Saturday. A great chance to sample local delicacies and fresh produce as well as choose a souvenir from the wide range of hand-made crafts.
